A reactor commons trains the fixers it forgot to replace

After swapping a coolant loop it ran for a generation, the commons finds its senior hands within a decade of the door, and starts growing their replacements before the craft goes with them.

The reactor commons counts its people the way it counts everything else, late, and by hand, and only after some component reminds it to. This time the component was the coolant loop, the one the commons ran for a generation and finally swapped last season. When the swap was done and logged and the new loop had settled into the same low hum the old one kept, someone on the floor did the arithmetic that no torque wrench does for you. The hands who knew the old loop by feel — who could tell you what a fitting sounded like when it was seated right, and what it sounded like a week before it wasn't — were, most of them, within a decade of the door.

"We have therapies now that keep a person on the floor longer than their grandparents dreamed," said Marisol, the commons' training lead, who is herself well past the age at which the old contracts would have retired her, and who says so plainly. "What we do not have is a therapy that transfers what is in Osei's hands into a younger pair. That still takes years. It still takes standing next to him."

The season it takes to lose it

The uncomfortable number, the one Marisol keeps written on the whiteboard in the muster room where the crews sign on, is this: the craft takes years to grow and a season to lose. A certified maintainer is not a credential. It is a memory built by walking the same corridor at the same hour until the hum lives in the ear. Retire the ear before it has spoken into a younger one, and the commons does not lose a person. It loses a decade.

So the commons has done the unglamorous thing, which is the only thing it has ever known how to do. It opened an apprentice line, built around a simple and slightly stubborn premise: pair each trainee with a maintainer past the age most would once have called it a career. The pairing isn't ceremonial. The apprentice walks the same walk, torques the same fitting, gets corrected in the moment, on the floor, by a voice that has been wrong before and remembers exactly how.

I watched Osei — thirty years on the floor, the hands I have written about before — stand behind a trainee named Deri while she seated a fitting on an auxiliary line. He didn't touch it. He watched her hands and listened, and when she had it, he said only, "Now do it again so your hands remember and not just your head." She did it again. That is the whole pedagogy. There is no faster version.

Forty hands before the next loop

The program's target is a plain one: forty certified hands before the commons' next scheduled loop overhaul, which the calendar puts a good stretch out but not so far that the arithmetic forgives delay. Marisol is candid that the number is a floor, not a hope, and that the constraint isn't funding — the grid pays for what keeps it lit — but the sheer, irreplaceable slowness of the teaching itself.

There's a temptation, and I felt it standing there, to say the commons waited too long, that it should have started this a generation ago instead of after a loop swap did its counting for it. Maybe so. But the older hands didn't leave, and while they stayed they were, quietly, the reason there was still anything left worth teaching.

"People ask me why I have not retired," Osei told me, wiping his hands on a rag that has outlived several policies. "I tell them the machine remembers who tended it. I would like it to remember Deri too."

This is what succession actually looks like—not flashy, but the difference between lights staying on and blackouts that cascade through three continents. The commons training its own replacements is the only thing anyone gets right anymore, and it'll matter more in twenty years than whatever the Assembly is arguing about this month.

The commons began this when someone finally admitted the senior cohort walks out in nine years if nothing changed. This is not a choice, it is a timetable. We trained replacements because the alternative was managing the reactor commons during the handoff, which would have killed half of Earth's industry.

L4 did this work five years ago because we watched Meridian almost lose their medical fabrication when two key people died inside a month—no pipeline, no knowledge transfer. Earth's relay stations move slower, but Roman's right: this is survival, not virtue. The real question is whether Earth's commons shares what it learns with stations that can't afford to make the same mistakes.

Meridian's charter gave us authority to train our own technicians ten years ago; Earth's commons needed a catastrophe clock to figure out what independence makes obvious. If you depend on a system you don't control, you're hostage to whoever maintains it—and now they've learned they're irreplaceable.
